Two years ago, I woke up on a warm, sunny day and showered in an open air shower under a cloudless blue sky. I had breakfast under a thatched roof palapa with my very soon to be husband. I laughed when the waiters brought us ‘lucky love tequila shots’ to wish us good luck. We didn’t need shots. We already felt so lucky. Two years ago today I walked barefoot across the sand, Caribbean blue water in the background, and promised to love him in good times and in bad, with all that I have to give and all that I feel inside, in the only way I know how. Completely and forever.
This morning I woke up to 30 degree temperatures and frost on my windshield. I smiled at my husband and wished him happy anniversary, leaning over past the puppy that separated us in bed to kiss him. I felt just as lucky as I did two years ago. A bit chillier, but just as lucky. Before I left for work he pulled me close to hug me, and when he released me I turned around to see a small red box sitting on our bed. I opened it to find a beautiful charm bracelet with charms that he had thoughtfully chosen to represent some of our first two years of marriage… a heart to represent his that I carry with me, a seashell to represent our wedding on the beach, a dog to represent our pups, and a house to represent our first home. And though there’s much remaining space on my new bracelet, he reassured me… ‘We can build on it.’ Very true. I couldn’t imagine building a life with anyone else.
