With his size, it’s hard to believe that Toby is still a puppy. He’s a 10 month old Viszla and was convinced that I came to his house only to play ball with him in the backyard for hours. Which I loved because it allowed me to capture him completely in his element. You can totally see all the puppyness in his big puppy smile…

You can see all the fun we had during Toby’s session by watching the slideshow HERE!  .  (By the way, I’ve included a new title page to this slideshow as a trial run… likes, dislikes, don’t cares?)

Love this light…

Oh yes… another bulldog. I never tire of them! They each have such unique and funny personalities. And I can’t resist a good underbite! This little nugget’s name is Duke and he’s less than a year old. He was very photogenic, as most bulldogs are, but mostly because he was so very interested in the camera. I didn’t have to do any of my usual shenanigans to get his attention… The sound of the camera shutter had him staring, intrigued, right into the lens. Perfection…

If you can’t get enough of Duke… you can see his slideshow by clicking HERE!

Look at his stance…

Seriously. Irresistible…

Nicole – no PS effect on the 2nd shot… just the loveliness of the 35L. Hands-down my favorite lens…

  • 'nette - will you look at that face!! i am partial to the unbite “club”….my scout has teefers too…but those are superb!

  • smittengreta - GEEEEEEEEZ!!!!!! LOVE THESE!

Last weekend I make the trek to Boston to attend a pet photography workshop by Jamie of Cowbelly Pet Photography. I have been a long-time fan of Jamie’s work and was thrilled to have the chance to meet and learn from her. And being surrounded by a room full of fellow pet photographers was inspirational in itself. The workshop experience was invaluable and has given me a great deal of perspective on my business and changes that need to be made (lest I lose my sanity and my husband). It’s all a learning experience.

One of my favorite parts of the workshop was the location shoot where we all got to shoot the four fantastic doggy models. Yay for class participation! Here is a shot of Jamie meeting our first model, an english bulldog named Thatcher. I’m pretty sure she was loving all the attention…

Thatcher’s cute little nugget leg…

Another model, an energetic puggle named Remi…

Some bonding time with a very handsome black lab named Buddy. One of the things I love about Jamie is that she puts the animals first. They are more important than anything else and it shows in her work and in the way that she interacts with them…

One of the best parts of my trip was getting to shack up with Boston resident and fellow pet photographer, Li Ward of Fat Orange Cat Studio. Check out her work, it pretty much rocks! She and her husband were gracious enough to take me in for the weekend, which I’m so thankful for! And it was a blast to have a weekend full of photography-geek talk. 🙂  Here is Li, with another one of the models… a chocolate poodle named Marley…

And a solo shot of Marley…

  • Lesley - These are great April! It was such a fantastic seminar my brain is on overload.

  • Jill - awesome work april! looks like it was a lot of fun!

  • Claire - love all your shots! i’m so jealous i couldn’t be there, too–looks like y’all had a blast!

  • sarah - totally jealous!! 🙂

  • Nick - Did jamie have sore lips for kissing all those dogs? haha Looks like you guys had an awesome time!

  • Sarah - that is really cool to see the pix of the other women you are working with taken by you, I can only imagine the creative juices that were flowing with this talent in one space!!!

  • john...of johnwairephoto - what an awesome experience. wish i could have made this one as well 🙂

  • Li W. - great captures of Jamie! i loved having you in Boston – wish you were closer!!

  • Jamie - I LOVE these shots! Wait, I think I said the exact same thing on Li’s post, lol. But I do! Your photos are just beautiful. It’s so cool to see another perspective on something I experienced. I so wish I could shoot with my fellow pet photographers every day! Can you imagine how fun that would be? Thank you so much for coming April, it was so great to finally put a face and voice to your name. I look forward to catching up with you on the forum! 🙂

  • Sarah - These are beautiful shots April! I went to the Chicago workshop and an equally amazing time! Wouldn’t it be great if all the workshop attendees from every city could get together in one setting talk shop?! Was the last shot of Marley with a 50mm 1.4? Beautiful bokeh!

  • April - Thanks guys. It was a blast. Sarah – that would rock if we could all get together! It’d be so much fun. I’m pretty sure the last shot was taken w/ my 35L. It’s my fave & I probably shoot w/ it 70% of the time.

  • beth - oh I wish I could have been there!!! It would have been great to meet someone close to me that does dog photography! My husband is tired of my “shop-talk” :). Looks like a lot of fun. I just love the bulldog images.

It’s not often that I photograph teenagers, but these three took it easy on me. And how hard could it be, really? Look at this beautiful family…

And see more of them by watching the slideshow HERE!

And we had to get some shots of their bulldog Lilly.

LOVE this one… It’s pretty obvious how much Mary loves her pup. And so classically bully how Lilly’s tongue hangs out the side of her mouth all the time. LOVE.
